ICBC Active Rehab. If you have experienced a motor vehicle accident ICBC will typically cover active rehabilitation with a kinesiologist as part of your recovery plan. The kinesiologists at MSK Health and Performance can help you use exercise to assist your recovery.

Highly educated. Our kinesiologists have a 4 year bachelor degree in kinesiology and work alongside our sports chiropractors and physiotherapists where they benefit from continued mentorship. This is well beyond the 32 hour minimum training required to become a personal trainer in BC.

Safer and supervised. Let us help you get started the right way. Start safely, without overdoing it. We will assess your current fitness and ability and create a customized program of exercises that matter most to creating a foundation of strength and stability that you can build on.

Clean, intimate gym. If you don’t like the crowds and noise of the gym, you’ll love exercising with us.

Collaboration. If you are also seeing one of our clinicians you can feel reassured that your kinesiologist and clinician can share notes and keep each other abreast of any special concerns or progress.

It’s hard to overstate the benefits of strength training

Check out the impressive list below to see how strength training builds a stronger, more resilient body!

  • Increased strength!! The stronger you are, the more you can do. Lift heavier things, open jars, play with your (grand) children, throw farther, jump higher, run faster, wrestle bears (don’t wrestle bears)! Life is better when you are stronger.
  • Increased metabolism. Increased muscle mass = increased metabolism= more calories burned, even at rest! So strength training does help you burn more fat.
  • Reduced risk of joint injury. Increased strength means increased stability and reduced risk of joints being injured when in vulnerable positions or under high loads. This means less knee injuries like ACL tears, ankle sprains or back injuries.
  • Reduced risk of muscle strains. It may surprise you to know that muscle strains don’t occur because they were over stretched but rather because they were overloaded. So being flexible doesn’t reduce the risk of muscle strains and tears, being strong does.
  • Reduced risk of tendon injury. Tendinopathy, tendinitis and tendon tears all occur as a result of overloading your tendon.  Strength training increases the strength of your tendons making them less vulnerable to injury…as long as you increase gradually!
  • Increased bone strength. Bones need stress to stay strong. Resistance training is a great way both to maintain strong bones and to help improve bone strength in those with osteoporosis or osteopenia.

Strength and Conditioning for Overall Well-Being

Strength training is also about improving balance, heart health, and overall well-being. Check out the benefits below!

  • Increased flexibility. Doing strength exercises in a full range of motion actually helps to improve and maintain flexibility.
  • Reduced fall risk. For seniors, increased strength improves balance and reduces the risk of falls.
  • Increase cardiovascular health. Strength training actually challenges your heart and improves cardiovascular health. The less rest between sets and the harder you train the more you can increase your heart rate. Our staff can help you determine your appropriate training heart rate so you don’t overdo it.
  • Injury healing. Graduated, safe, progressive resistance exercises are a cornerstone of rehabilitating injured tissue. The safe load on healing tissue is what provides the necessary stimulus for increased tissue repair, organization and flexibility.
  • Other health benefits. Strength training helps to manage chronic health issues such as heart disease, diabetes, arthritis, depression and obesity.
  • Increased confidence. Whether it’s your increased capacity at work or play, reduced fear of injury or your improved body shape, being stronger will make you feel like you can get more out of your life!  Because you can!!!
